China's Wang Xu won the Olympic women's wrestling 72kg category gold with an impressive victory over Russian wrestler Gouzei Maniourova in the final.

Wang, who knokced out five-time world champion Kyoko Hamaguchi in the semifinal, maintained her form and took the upper hand throughout the final, defeating Maniourova 7-2. Maniourova settled for the silver medal.

Hamaguchi, who was regarded the hottest title favorite, found some solace when she won the bronze medal after beating Svitlan Sayenko of Ukraine 4-0 in the third-place match.
