The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced in Athens on August 23 that women's shot put champion Korzhanenko of Russia has been excluded from the 28th Olympic Games after failing a doping test.
Korzhanenko, 30, tested positive on August 18 for stanozolo, a banned anabolic steriod, after her shot put win in Olympia.
The IOC Executive Board on Monday morning heard the report of the Disciplinary Commission and made the decision.
The IOC said that Korzhanenko "is disqualified from the women's shot put event, where she had placed first."
It said in a statement that her gold medal and diploma have been withdrawn and "she is excluded from the Olympic Games."
"The IAAF, world's athletics governing body, is requested to modify the results of the event accordingly and to consider any further action within its own competence," the statement said.
It also said that the Russian Olympic Committee has been ordered to return to the IOC, as soon as possible, the medal and diploma awarded to the athlete in relation to the women's shot put event.
The statement added that over 1,662 tests have been performed out for the 3,000 tests that IOC is expected to conduct throughout the Games.
