The Uruguayan press hailed the triumph by the Chinese athletes at the Athens Olympic Games on August 23 as "the Chinese revolution."
El Pais said China has consolidated its step in the Athens Games, even reaping incredible wins such as the surprising gold medal in the women's doubles tennis by Li Ting and Sun Tiantian.
Li and Sun sealed their match in 89 minutes against second- seeded Conchita Martinez and Virginia Ruano of Spain 6-3, 6-3.
Besides, important ratification came in tennis table when top- ranked Zhang Yining easily pocketed the women's singles gold, increasing the Chinese collection of the men's doubles by Chen Qi and Ma Lin.
The Uruguayan daily also hailed the victory of the Chinese women's field hockey victory over Argentina 3-2. With the win, China led the group with 12 points, avoiding a match against the strong Netherlands.
Besides, Chinese gymnast Teng Haibin also struck the gold in the pommel horse.
"There is no doubt. Yesterday was the day of the Chinese revolution. Let this be said by the United States who for the moment lost the lead in the medal table," said El Pais.
The duel with the United States could be considered a presage of what the Chinese are doing in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games, the paper said.
The daily also published a large photo with a title "Red Fury", featuring tennis winners Li and Sun running with the Chinese flag.
