Latin Americans to fight for men's soccer gold
font size

After the semifinals Tuesday the final game for men's football tournament will see two Latin American teams, Argentina and Paraguay, fighting for the Athens Olympic men's football gold medal scheduled for Saturday.

The Argentine team marches into the Olympic football final after a 3-0 victory over Italy Tuesday.

Argentinean striker Carlos Tevez proved to be a superstar in the game that saw the "New Maradona" open the scoring 16 minutes into the game.

A mistake by Italy's defender Matteo Ferrari who intended to head back the ball in front of the goal, turned out to be just a comfortable cross to Tevez who whipped the ball home about 10 meters before the goal.

Tevez would have a second goal about 20 minutes later, had it not been called off.

The Italian side tried hard for an equalizer, but the Argentinean defense line was too strong for them to penetrate.

In the 68th minute, Argentina's midfielder Luis Gonzalez fired home another goal at the corner of the penalty area, making it 2-0.

It was Tevez who set up the third goal for Argentina at the 84th minute. This time the 1.68-meter striker sprinted ahead with the ball, sent it to Mariano Gonzalez who slammed home to seal the game 3-0.

In another semifinal match on Tuesday, Paraguay stopped "dark horse" Iraq 3-1.
