Ricardo Ales Santos and Emanuel Rego of Brazil showed their supremacy again by winning the men's beach volleyball title in the Athens Olympics on August 25 night.
The reigning world champions and top-seeded Brazilians claimed their country's first ever men's beach volleyball Olympic title by beating Javier Bosma and Pablo Herrera of Spain 21-16, 21-15 in 42 minutes with powerful serves.
"It's a great honor for me to be here and this is the peak moment for every athlete," said Santos. "It's a dream come true. I am happy we played so good with my partner and we achieved our goal."
Santos/Rego, who won the world championship last October in Rio de Janeiro, combined for seven aces during the game, while Bosma/ Herrera had none.
The Brazilian duo, who have won nine World Tour events since starting their partnership at the end of the 2002 season, led throughout the game. After leading 18-16 at the first set, Santos managed a 3-0 run alone with an ace and two wonderful spikes to take the first set.
The second set was even easier for Brazilians, as they overwhelmed the 15th-seed Spaniards in every aspect. They led by as many as eight points at 14-6.
Santos had 26 points in 35 attacking attempts, while Rego, who ranked fourth in the attacking at the tournament, had only 4.
"We never gave up and we trained for four years and now Richardo and I reached our goal." said Rego.
Bosma, who had 125 successful spikes at the tournament and ranked No. 1, scored 11 points and no block, Herrera added 6 points and 3 blocks.
"It's the first time I took part in the Olympic Games. It was a great match and at least we got the silver medal," said Herrera.
Early Wednesday, Switzerland's Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel took the bronze medal by beating Australian's Julien Prosser and Mark Williams 2-1.
