The death toll caused by Typhoon Aere has amounted to at least 22, according to reports reaching here from Taipei.

Of these 22 deaths, 15 were residents of the mountainous Taoshan village in Wufeng township, Hsinchu County, who were buried alive by mudflows following torrential rains triggered by the typhoon.

The township was one of 80 mudflow-prone regions listed in an alert issued by local department concerned.

A total of 4,825 residents in these risky regions were evacuated from their homes ahead of the typhoon, bureau officials said.

Over 30,000 households were still without electricity and 914,500 without water as of Thursday morning, according to the center.

Of the 77 highways where traffic blockage was reported because of rockslides or mudflows, 36 were still being repaired.
