China urges Afghan security improvements
font size

China has urged Afghanistan to improve and maintain its security as the country's presidential elections come ever closer, China Radio International reported Friday. Speaking in New York, Chinese Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Zhang Yishan, said that Afghanistan's main task is to bring into existence a government based on free and fair elections, which would be a milestone in its political process.

Zhang Yishan also urges the international community to offer aid to Afghanistan for security purposes.

He promises that China will actively support and participate in Afghanistan's peaceful reconstruction.

Meanwhile, Jean Arnault, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's special representative for Afghanistan, has reported to the UN Security Council on preparations for the Afghan elections.

He says that security is the key to successful elections and the UN has helped Afghanistan make suitable security plans.
