A luncheon was held Friday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Deng Xiaoping, which fell on Aug. 22.

Henry Ying Tung Fok, vice chairman of the National Committee ofthe Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Sun Jiazheng, China's minister of culture, and Gao Siren, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), attended the luncheon.Deng's three daughters were also present.

Speaking at the luncheon, Li Gang, deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, said the "One Country, Two Systems" principle initiated by Deng has been successfully implemented in Hong Kong.

Henry Ying Tung Fok recalled his meetings with Deng. Fok pointed out that to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Deng's birth, it's of more vital importance that Hongkongers grasp the opportunities and build a more beautiful Hong Kong, so as to live up to the earnest expectations of the late leader.

Deng's daughter Deng Nan, on behalf of her family, extended greetings and expressed appreciation to the Hong Kong people for their sincere sentiments toward her father. She also hoped that Hong Kong would enjoy economic development and social prosperity and that its people would live a happy life.

The luncheon is part of the "Giant of the Century" -- Exhibition in Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Deng Xiaoping, which opened Aug. 26 and will last till Sept. 4.
