font size

Osleidys Menendez of Cuba won the women's javelin throw gold medal at the Athens Olympic Games in Athens on August 27.

World record holder Osleidys made her winning throw in the first attemp to a distance of 71.53 meters, beating the Olympic record of 68.91 set up by Norway's Trine Hattestad in Sydney four years ago.

And her winning mark was only one centimeter away from her own world record of 71.54 meters set up in Rethimnon, Germany in July, 2001.

Germany's Steffi Nerius got the silver medal with her personal best of 65.82 meters, and Greece's Mirela Manjani took the bronze in 64.29.
