Russia's Slesarenko wins women's high jump

World indoor champion Yelena Slesarenko of Russia won the women's high jump at the Olympic Games Saturday.

Slesarenko cleared 2.04m in the first attempt which none of her rivals could match and she went on to set an Olympic record of 2. 06.

She then tried to break the world record of 2.09, but failed in three attempts at the height of 2.10.

Double world champion Hestrie Cloete of South Africa, who came second in Sydney, took the silver again and Ukraine's Viktoriya Styopina took the bronze.

Styopina also cleared 2.02 but lost on countback after two failures at both 1.96 and 1.99.
