Practice over a half century has amply proved that the system of people's congresses is a fine system that suits China's conditions, Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo said Saturday.

"It is the fundamental route and best pattern for people to exercise their power as masters of the country. It represents the superiority of China's socialist system and the universality of socialist democracy," Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said at a lecture on legal system held by the committee. Wu chaired the lecture.

Wu said under the new situation, the work of people's congresses should be conducive to strengthening and improving the leadership of the Party, bringing into play the superiority of socialist system, fully mobilizing the enthusiasm of the people, safeguarding national unity, national solidarity and social stability and promoting the all-round economic and social progress.

The lecture session was held as the 50th anniversary of the founding of the NPC, which falls on Sept. 15, is approaching.

"To develop socialist democracy and build socialist political civilization, it's important to adhere to and improve the system of people's congresses," said Zhang Chunsheng, the main speaker who is a member of the Law Committee of the NPC.

"It has exceedingly great influence on economic growth, social progress and the lasting peace and stability of the country," Zhang said.

Vice chairpersons of the NPC Standing Committee listened to thelecture.
