Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco won his second gold medal at the Olympic Games in the men's 5,000m to add to the 1,500m title Saturday.
Guerrouj outsprinted world record holder Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia to win in 13 minutes 14.39 seconds.
Bekele, winner of the men's 10,000m, took the silver in 13:14.59 and Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge had the bronze in 13:15.10.
Guerrouj, four-time champion in the 1,500m, said, "I was very optimistic before I came to Athens and I think that this is a historic victory that I dedicate to the Moroccan people.
"I was afraid, however, that the rhythm of the race would be fast but my strategy worked and I was able to cope with this fear and I felt ready and that is thanks to my coaches and my teammates."
He added, "I benefited from my experience. I took part in this 5000m race on the last day of the Games and it was a good opportunity to go down in the history books as the first athlete to win two gold medals in 1500m and 5000m. This is an honour to the Morrocan and Arab sport. I am extremely happy to have achieved that gold."
