Reconstruction work has been completed in the county of Zhaosu, located in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which was hit by a horrible earthquake on Dec. 1, 2003.
The fourth agricultural division of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, which is in charge of the reconstruction, attended the unveiling ceremony of the earthquake monument Monday along with local officials, while 1,972 homeless households in the earthquake moved into their new flats.
Huang Qilong, secretary of the division committee of the Communist Party of China, said with the support of all levels of government and society as a whole, the reconstruction work was completed in eight months.
Now the people from the quake-hit area have been relocated to new buildings and students can have their lessons in the new classrooms, he said.
The division built new roads and set up new flats covering over 106,800 sq. meters with a gross value of 53.5 million yuan (about 6.5 million US dollars).
The county of Zhaosu was hit by an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale, leaving 10 people dead and 34 others injured.
