Defense minister meets Cuban guests

Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan met Friday with Leopoldo Cintra Frias, commander ofthe western army of Cuba, and his party.

Cao, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and state councilor, said that the development of the relations between the two armies is based on a solid foundation because Cubais the first country in the western hemisphere to establish diplomatic ties with China.

In recent years, the two sides have improved their relationship, increased high-level exchanges and expanded cooperation, said Cao.

Cintra, also member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, said that Cuba appreciates China's consistent support.

He said that the Cuban Army, similar to its Chinese counterpart, needs to be modernized as soon as possible.

It is of great significance to further cooperation between the Chinese and Cuban armies under the fast-changing international situation, he stressed.
