Over 1,000 Sudanese refugees who arrived in Uganda early last week are facing starvation in Palorinya in Moyo district in northwestern Uganda, The New Vision newspaper reported on Friday.
The refugees have no money and boil the limited maize corns they carried from their home country under trees. They eat only once a day as hope for relief food is waning.
"Since we arrived here, we have received no food. We depend on the little we came with and if it is finished, we don't know what will happen to our children," Alice Bunja, a mother of three was quoted as saying.
Local official Peter Iku Dolo told press that before the arrival of the Sudanese refugees, his office had contacted the Office of the Prime Minister and the UN agency for refugees about the need for food in the internally displaced persons (IDPs) campsin Ara but nothing had been done.
"Today we have the Sudanese who have nothing to eat and also the IDPs in Ara are starving. Despite our efforts, they have not been assisted," he said.
The official added that IDPs failed to produce their own food due to the prolonged drought that hit the district and they need urgent food aid.
