CE: Beijing Olympic Games to create business opportunities for HK

Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa said Thursday that the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will not only create opportunities for Beijing, but also for Hong Kong and other overseas investors.

He made the remarks after the First Plenary of the Hong Kong-Beijing Economic and Trade Cooperation Conference, a new mechanismbetween the governments of two places for strengthening economic and trade ties.

Top visiting Beijing officials including Liu Qi and Wang Qishanexpressed here Thursday their welcome of investors from Hong Kong to take part in Olympic Games related projects and pledged to strengthen the Beijing-HK economic ties.

Tung said that the on-going two-day Olympic Market Economy Promotion Conference will introduce to Hong Kong projects worth over 120 billion, offering huge investment and service opportunities to Hong Kong enterprises.

Given their expertise and experience, Hong Kong businesses are well equipped to support Beijing to make the 2008 Beijing Olympicsthe most remarkable Games ever hosted.

Tung said the meeting of senior officials marks a new phase of economic and trade co-operation between Beijing and Hong Kong, a phase characterized by governmental support and speedy development.The meeting will have far-reaching implications for the long-term development of economic and trade co-operation between the two places, Tung noted.

He said the meeting injects new impetus into the economic co-operation between Beijing and Hong Kong, bringing Hong Kong peoplemore real benefits in the years to come.

Strengthening co-operation between Beijing and Hong Kong will boost the economic growth and prosperity of the two places, the further development of the two zones and the country as a whole, Tung stressed.

Hong Kong and Beijing will develop faster and better by complementing each other's strength. The two most important citiesof our country will then make new contributions to the opening up and development of our country in the 21st century.

Liu Qi, member of the political bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) central committee and secretary of the CPC Beijing municipal committee and Mayor Wang Qishan arrived in Hong Kong Wednesday for attending the opening of the Eighth Beijing-HK Economic Co-operation Forum and Olympic Economy Market Promotion Conference Thursday.
