Rare green jade discovered in NW China

A large, rare piece of green jade weighing approximately 60 tons was spotted in Qiemo County, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, the largest ever discovered in Xinjiang, said jade experts.

The huge semi-precious stone was discovered in the bed of the Tashishayi River west of the Altun Mountains some 300 km away from the seat of Qiemo county, according to a press release by the county government.

Xinjiang is one of China's leading jade production bases, and Qiemo is known for its production of high-quality jade. The county produces 100 tons of jade ore per year, or two thirds of Xinjiang's total.
