China has made an important breakthrough in grain storage security technology. A new grain storage technology with independent intellectual property rights - the "green nuisanceless storage system" has been tested and applied by national and local grain depots in Yunnan, Hebei, Sichuan, Jiangxi, Hubei and Henan and has shown satisfactory effect. Experts on grain storage believe once this technology is generally applied it will save billions of yuan in grain storage costs. Meanwhile it will provide a reliable technology for reducing and eliminating the aging of grains and ensuring grain security.

As learned China has an annual grain production of 450 million tons, half of which needs drying treatment. In collaboration with national scientific and technological institutes Shannxi Qin Peng Technology Corporation has invested more than 6,000 yuan since 1998 and successfully developed the Green Nuisanceless Storage System. Two core technologies of the system - "ozone controlled atmosphere storage" and "grain mass three dimensional ventilation" are the latest technologies resulting from the Key Science-Technology Project of the National 'Tenth Five-Year-Plan' of China, and have passed authentication in August 2003.

With this technology grains that exceed water content standards can be put into storage without the need for toppling. Also the drying scale is large with several thousand tons of grains being treated each time and the resulting quality is comparative to airing. Compared with high-temperature drying machines about 4 billion yuan can be saved each year nationwide in storage on the basis of two cents for each kilogram.

The technology has been proved to be a mature one, said Jin Zuxun, leader of the grain storage technology consulting group of the Grain Administration Department of the State Grain Administration. It is a green technology and is environmentally friendly. Apart from drying treatment the technology can be used as insecticide and bactericide, which can degrade organic phosphorus pesticide and remove and degrade certain fungus poisons making it a worthwhile technology.
