Fujian, a coastal province in east China, is taking steps to turn Fuzhou, Xiamen and Quanzhou cities into influential and competitive major cities on the western bank of the Taiwan Straits.
Provincial governor Lu Zhangong said here recently that building the straits' west bank economic zone must rely on the support of key cities.
According to the provincial development plan, each city will have its own role in the province's future. Fuzhou is the provincial capital. Xiamen will be China's Special Economic Zone and Quanzhou will be an industrial and trade center.
Fujian province will build an urban transportation system, which will cut the time to travel between major cities to less than four hours and the travel time between major cities and neighboring counties to less than one hour.
The province also gave priority to construction of deep water harbors at Xiamen, Fuzhou and Meizhou harbors to increase their transportation capacity and competitiveness in urban development.
Other infrastructure construction, such as provincial railways and major highways, will be accelerated. In addition, Fuzhou, Xiamen and Quanzhou cities are planning to build track trains to further shorten transport time.
