CSFB picks Ex-Merrill banker as China head
font size

Global investment bank Credit Suisse First Boston, or CSFB, has announced the appointment of former Merrill Lynch banker Zhang Liping as its country head for China.

Zhang Liping -- currently chief executive of Hong Kong film-making group Imagi International -- replaces Wei Christianson, who left in July in support of CSFB's ousted former chief executive John Mack.

45-year-old Zhang will assume overall responsibility for CSFB's investment banking activities in China and will report to Eric Varvel, head of investment banking for Asia-Pacific (except Japan).

CSFB Asia-Pacific chairman Paul Calello says this new hiring reflects CSFB's continuing focus on the Chinese market, and ensures that they have the resources in place to offer the best possible service to clients.

Zhang Liping was a graduate of Beijing University with a master's degree from St John's University in New York. Industry observers are optimistic about the appointment and saying Zhang has been chosen for his skills and reputation rather than any political and family connections.
