Arafat calls on Quartet to salvage roadmap
font size

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has called upon the international quartet to salvage the roadmap plan for Middle East peace.

Arafat's appeal was made at a joint news conference held with visiting Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit and intelligence chief Omer Suleiman, reported China Radio International.

Arafat stressed that the Palestinian people and the leadership are still committed to the implementation of the roadmap.

He meanwhile accused the Israeli government of intending to undermine the entire peace process and escape from implementing any agreement that were signed between the conflicting sides.

Representatives of the quartet, which comprises the United States, the United Nations, Russia and the European Union, are scheduled to convene later in September to discuss the situation in the region.
