Jordan's king promises support to Iraq's debt reduction
font size

Jordanian King Abdullah II pledged Monday to rally support for the reconstruction of the war-torn Iraq and help ease its foreign debt, state-run Petra news agency said.

During his meeting with Iraqi Planning Minister Mehdi Hafez, the king said his county will "pursue its contacts with different world powers to gain support for the reconstruction of Iraq and easing its debt."

Amman is expected to host an October meeting of a joint Jordanian-Iraqi committee which will discuss numerous bilateral issues, including border security between the two neighbors and the question of Iraq's debt.

Iraq owes 120 billion dollars in foreign debt, including over 1.3 billion dollars to Jordan, mostly to private firms.

Hafez arrived here Monday morning on a two-day work visit.
