font size

Chinese Foreign Ministry SpokesmanKong Quan said Tuesday that he was deeply regretful for the incident that a foreign reporter had got injured in a crowd of agitated fans immediately after the Asian Cup final on Aug. 7.

One reporter from the Associated Press and another from the Agence France-Presse (AFP) were pushed by the crowd of fans after the Asian Cup final closed in Beijing, and the AP reporter's head was hurt, according to Kong.

Kong said he paid great attention to the issue and reported the incident to the police department in Beijing. An official with the Foreign Ministry paid a visit to the two reporters to express sympathy, he said.

"The Chinese government will do its utmost for the legal reporting rights and interest of foreign journalists," he said. "The situation at that time was chaotic," he said, noting relevant department is continuing the investigation.

Sino-US trade moves toward "Win-Win"
The present Sino-US trade development has made progress toward reducing the trade deficit of the United States with China, Kong said.

Between January and June, the total Sino-US trade volume reached 76.9 billion US dollars, up 36.5 percent over the same period of last year. This is in line with the growth rate of the country's total foreign trade.

In a breakdown, China's exports to US witnessed a hike of 35 percent over the same period last year, while imports to US grew at 38 percent.

"If this momentum keeps up, the United State's trade deficit with China will be gradually eased," Kong said at a regular press conference.

Kong said the hitches in Sino-US trade were normal and the trade development was beneficial to both sides.

"We should guard against politicizing the two countries' trade friction. I believe it could be solved effectively through peaceful negotiation," he said.

China hopes ROK nuclear experiment problem solved
China hopes the Republic of Korea (ROK) could cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to solve its nuclear experiment problems, said the spokesman.

China received messages from both the ROK and the agency saying that the IAEA had already wrapped up its investigation in ROK, Kong said.

Kong said China wishes the issue would not hamper the scheduling of the fourth round of six-party talks about the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. The working group meeting should be held before the end of September.

There have already been three rounds of discussions in Beijing involving China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the United States, the Republic of Korea, Russia and Japan.

Early settlement of boundary issue accords with interests of China, India
To solve the boundary issue between China and India at an early date accords with the common interests of the two countries, said Kong.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told journalists Saturday that India will continue to promote the process of solving border dispute with China, and will establish steady cooperative ties with China.

When asked to make comments on Singh's words, Kong said at a regular press conference that India is an important neighbor of China, and constantly deepening the Sino-Indian long-term constructive and cooperative partnership is the sincere hope and existing policy of the Chinese government.

Kong said the Chinese side is willing to maintain the good momentum of development in the Sino-Indian ties, under the guidance of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.

The boundary issue can be solved in a fair, reasonable and acceptable way, as long as the two sides take the overall situation into account and make consultations based on equality and mutual understanding and mutual accommodation, Kong noted.

China hopes new round of six-party talks could be held as scheduled
All involved in six-party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue should be restrained, calm and strive to solve the issue in a peaceful and practical manner. Only by doing so, can the new round of talks be held as scheduled.

Kong said there have always been difficulties in the six-party talks. Now, only through the concerted efforts of all sides will the fourth round of talks be held before the end of September, which was agreed by all the parties in the previous round of talks.

He said that China has been trying to play a constructive role in pushing forward the six-party talks. It is China's hope that other parties will be patient and practical and transcend all existing obstacles to hold the new round of talks on the scheduled time.

China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the United States, the Republic of Korea, Russia and Japan, already met for three previous rounds of talks in Beijing.
