Egyptian FM, Chinese envoy mull Mideast situation

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit on Tuesday had talks with visiting Chinese Mideast envoy Wang Shijie over the volatile Mideast situation, according to the Chinese Embassy in Cairo.

During the talks, Abul Gheit said that the situation in the Middle East was sensitive and complicated, and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the aftermath of the Iraq war had severe impact on regional peace and stability.

"Egypt has been working to resume talks between the Palestinians and Israel and to prompt the two sides to implement the roadmap peace plan," Abul Gheit said.

He said that Egypt was grateful for China's support for the cause of the Arab nation and its efforts to help achieve peace in the region.

He said that bilateral ties between Egypt and China have developed well since the establishment of their diplomatic ties in 1956, and he was looking forward to meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing next week over regional and international issues of mutual interest.

For his part, Wang praised Egypt's role in the regional arenaand said that China was ready to work with Egypt to promote peace and stability in the Middle East.

Wang arrived here Sunday evening for a four-day visit to Egypt.He will then travel to Lebanon and Israel.
