Czech troops to leave Afghanistan
font size

One hundred Czech soldiers serving in Afghanistan under the US military command are to be repatriated this month.

A Czech Defense Department spokesman said the soldiers on a six-month mission in Afghanistan will return between September 15 and 20, reported China Radio International.

He said Czech will not seek a replacement despite a U.S. attempt to request continuous military assistance.

At present over 130 Czech soldiers are in Afghanistan with the majority of them under the U.S. military command.

Under American command, the Czechs participated in efforts to track down armed groups of Taliban and Al-Qaeda fighters in the Afghan mountains.

Another 30 Czech troops are in Afghanistan's capital Kabul under NATO's military operation.

The unit's deployment marked the Czechs' first direct involvement in a combat operation since World War Two.
