Three Gorges Project stands flood test
font size

The mammoth Three Gorges Project, believed the world's largest water control project, has stood the severe test of the largest flood crest since 1998.

When the flood crest passed the Three Gorges Project at a speed of 60,500 cubic meters per second Wednesday, shipping navigation in the reservoir area remained normal.

The 10 generating units of the Three Gorges Project produced 124 million kwh of electricity Wednesday.

An expert acknowledged that the flood was the largest one on the mainstream of the Yangtze River since the water level at the Three Gorges reservoir rose to 135 meters in 1998.

The flood peak was forecast beforehand and emergency measures were taken in advance. Shock brigades patrolled the reservoir around the clock.

Over the past three days, 4,600 passengers in 22 shipping vessels have crossed the Three Gorges reservoir before transferring to buses.
