The Spanish government approved a plan Friday to join the European police force which will be deployed for crisis missions, according to Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega.

She said that the Spanish government firmly believes in the role of "multilateral peace initiatives, rather than unilateral ones."

The creation of the European police force, consisting of police forces of France, Spain and the Netherlands, was proposed in October 2003.

The minister said that the international police force will be open to other EU members and the candidate members of the Europeanbloc.

The Inter-Ministerial High Level Committee will be in charge ofthe political-military coordination between member states of the police force, she added.

According to the minister, the headquarters of the European police force will be located in Vicenza, Italy, and headed by Commander of the European Militarized Police Force.
