Chinese weightlifters have targeted at six gold medals at the coming 12th Paralympic Games in the Greek capital, Chinese coach told Xinhua Monday in Athens.
"We won two golds in Atlanta and took five in Sydney. This time we will secure four and try to grab five to six gold medals in the sport in Athens," said Li Weipu, a native of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in northwestern China.
China has picked up 13 lifters from a pre-games camp of 19 selected from across the country, for categories of men's 48kg up to above 100kg and women's 40kg up to 82.5kg. The camp initiated early this year in northern Chinese city Tianjin.
"Our athletes feel good since their arrival here (on Saturday) and they are training well these days. I think we could reach the target," Li said.
Olympic champion Zhang Haidong from the Sydney Games won the world title with a lift of 235kg at the 2002 World Championships.
"I am in good shape and determined to give my best shot here," he told Xinhua.
The weightlifting finals start next Monday and finish on September 27, which is also the closing day for the 12-day Games.
