Russia calls on world to unite against terrorism
font size

Russian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Oleg Scherbak here on Wednesday called on the world to unite in the fight against terrorism which has the potential to spread to all parts of the globe.

"No one country alone can withstand terrorism attacks. We cannot fight that battle single-handedly. It is a global problem and should be dealt with globally," he said.

Scherbak said negotiations with terrorists would not yield any positive change, as the perpetrators were inhuman.

The ambassador appealed to the world to desist from promoting terrorism through funding or offering terrorists asylum, saying the same terrorists would turn against them.

He called for better coordination between security services, particularly with regard to blocking channels of terrorist funding and logistics.

Russia has recently been subjected to terrorist attacks with the last three weeks having witnessed the downing of two passenger airliners, a suicide bombing at a Moscow metro station and hostagetaking early this month at a school in the town of Beslan, in North Ossetia region, which borders the rebellious republic of Chechnya.

In the hostage crisis, more than 330 people were massacred, among them 160 children, while more than 900 sustained injuries.

He said Russia was prepared in military terms to deal with terrorists and encouraged Russians to participate by reporting any cases of suspected terrorists.

The ambassador added that his country would step up security measures in order to enhance handling of crisis situations, and the Russian government, parliament and civil society would work together to revise the country's laws in order to suppress terrorist activities.
