UN chief says Iraq war illegal
font size

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Wednesday said that the US invasion of Iraq in March 2003 was "illegal".

"I'm one of those who believe that there should have been a second resolution" from the UN Security Council to green-light the US-led invasion, Annan said in an interview with BBC World Serviceradio.

"I've indicated that it was not in conformity with the UN charter from our point of view, and from the charter point of view it was illegal," the UN chief noted.

Annan also said that, given the current level of violence and unrest, it was unlikely that Iraq would be able to hold credible elections as planned in January 2005.
