Fruitful results made in basic weapon researches in China

It is learned from the related department under the General Armaments Department of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) that in recent years outstanding results have been achieved in the applied basic research of the weapons and equipment, bringing the whole weaponry level to a new stage.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the main aspects are listed as below:

-- A breakthrough has been made in some basic theories in the research of weapons and equipment. Twenty per cent of the applied basic researches have reached the world's advanced levels, 60 per cent the advanced levels at home. Of the results, 35 per cent have been applied to key technological projects and 18 per cent have been applied to the research of equipment and the transformation of active service equipment.

-- Great progress has been made in the important basic researches concerning national security. The program of important basic researches for national security, carried out by the General Armaments Department, involves branches of the army, navy, air force and strategic missile units, covering fields of aviation, space flight, aviation, ship, weapons and electronics. So far, major progress has been achieved in research projects and some results have played an important role in the development of science and technology and of weapons and equipment.

-- The whole level in the development of the basic technologies applied to weapons and equipment has been further raised. Important breakthroughs have been made in many projects. The projects include the basic technological researches of electronic components, materials making, and technological processing and testing. The microwave power device has filled a gap in China. New discoveries have been made in the related theory of micro-electromechanical system and effect, mini-sensor and integrated circuit technique. Great advance has also been achieved in the research of the energy-converting technology of light, heat and electricity.

-- The system of applied basic research projects for weapons and equipment and a management mechanism have basically formed. A rational management system of applied basic research projects has been built and perfected, forming a strong basic research force with a large number of subject leaders.
