Indonesian presidential candidates appear in public despite ban

Two Indonesian presidential candidates incumbent president Megawati Soekarnoputri and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono appeared in front of supporters on Thursday, despite the General Elections Commission (KPU) ban on mass gathering ahead of presidential run-off.

President Megawati appears in front of some hundreds of massivegathering in central Jakarta, asking people to jointly maintain security during the second round of the presidential race, and reaffirming condemnation against the bombing in front of the Australian embassy last week.

"Let us maintain security well, although we have mourned on the explosion on the Australian embassy, which killed Indonesian,"she said on her speech.

"But I am also happy because people in this metropolitan city are not shaken and panic, but remain in unity to calm down the situation," she said.

She asked people to maintain such condition up to the election.

Separately in the city, Megawati's rival Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono also appeared in front of some 1,000 supporters today.

He promised to fight for the achievement of the goals his supporter have been seeking.

Megawati and Susilo to compete on the runoff of the country's first direct presidential election on September 20.
