Indonesian Incumbent President Megawati Sukarnoputri believes she can win next week's run-off vote. Most opinion polls, however, show former army general, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, poised to snatch the leadership by a landslide.
Opinion polls released on Wednesday gave challenger Bambang Susilo Yudhoyono a commanding lead over the incumbent.
A survey by the Washington-based International Foundation for Electoral Systems showed Yudhoyono leading with 61 percent, with Megawati at 29 percent.
In the first formal campaign event before next Monday's election, Megawati and Yudhoyono, her former security chief, answered questions in separate live TV broadcasts late on Tuesday.
The need to combat terrorism was pushed to the forefront by last week's bombing that killed nine people outside the Australian Embassy in Jakarta.
Both vowed to prevent further attacks.
Yudhoyono said more cooperation was needed between intelligence, police and immigration agencies, and with regional governments.
Megawati promised to boost international cooperation in the fight against terror and allocate greater resources for the police. But she acknowledged it would be difficult to prevent more attacks in the world's most populous Muslim nation.
