Study projects enhance students' knowledge about HK history

Students from 44 Hong Kong secondary schools participated in a competition to contribute their insightful study projects on the theme of "Changes in the 20th Century: Personages and Events in Hong Kong."

Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony at the Museum of History on Saturday, Deputy Director of Leisure and Cultural Services Choi Suk-kuen said the competition aimed at enhancing students' knowledge about Hong Kong's history and culture through historical site visits and a thorough investigation and research into the history and changes in society.

The competition, jointly organized by the Hong Kong Museum of History and Hong Kong Institute for Promotion of Chinese Culture, in association with the Public Records Office and the Education and Manpower Bureau, received 58 entries.

The competition was divided into two sections. Entrants had to be in groups of two to 10 students, working under the guidance of one or two teachers. The submissions had to be mainly in written form, though they could be supplemented by CD-ROMs, videos, dioramas or models, artifacts, photo albums or cassette tapes.

The written reports were judged according to relevancy of the theme, systematic use of collected materials, objectivity in analysis, concrete analysis of the topic, bibliography and footnotes, and overall quality production.

Choi said the competition provided a comprehensive and valuable learning experience for participating students.

"The skills the students learnt are all considered essential intheir present role as students as well as in their future career,"said Choi.
