CPC Central Committee issues communique after plenum

The 16th Central Committee of theCommunist Party of China (CPC) issued a communique at the end of its Fourth Plenum Sunday, deciding Hu Jintao succeeds Jiang Zemin as chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission (CMC).

At the plenum, the CPC Central Committee deliberated and passeda decision on accepting Jiang's resignation from the post of CPC chairman, and highly evaluated Jiang's "outstanding contributions to the Party, the state and the people," said the communique.

The CPC Central Committee also approved Xu Caihou, previously aCMC member, to be vice-chairman of the Commission, and added Chen Bingde, Qiao Qingchen, Zhang Dingfa and Jing Zhiyuan to the CMC asnew members.

The plenum, which started on Thursday, was presided over by thePolitical Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. Hu Jintao deliveredan important speech at the plenum.

According to the communique, a decision on enhancing the Party's ruling capabilities were deliberated and passed at the plenum, and Zeng Qinghong, Chinese vice-president and a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made explanations on the draft of the decision.

Also adopted at the plenum was a report of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection on the corruption charges on Tian Fengshan, former minister of land and resources, and a decision was made to expel him from the Party Central Committee and from the CPC.

In accordance with the Party Constitution, said the communique,the plenum also decided to make Ashat Kerimbay and Wang Zhengwei, previously alternate members of the 16th CPC Central Committee, full members of the Committee.
