Disaster-hit Haiti calls for aid
font size

Haitian Interim President Boniface Alexandre has appealed to the international community for emergency assistance in the face of what he calls a "terrible tragedy".

Alexandre says Haiti needs the support to respond to a situation he likens to a humanitarian disaster.

Tropical Storm Jeanne has left more than 600 people dead in Haiti, another tragedy for the Caribbean country in a year marked by revolts, military interventions and deadly floods.

The US Embassy has provided 60,000 US dollars in immediate relief.
