China's legislature and justice should not only base on its own specific conditions, but learn from experience from overseas, said a senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official.

Luo Gan, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks at a meeting Monday with Dr. Manuel dos Santos Serra, president of the Supreme Administrative Court of Portugal.

Since China and Portugal forged diplomatic ties more than 20 years ago, Luo noted, they have witnessed continuous growth of friendly exchanges and cooperation in such fields as politics, economy and culture, an increased exchange of high-level visits, and sound judicial relations.

He said China attaches importance to foreign exchanges and he voiced the hope that Serra would conduct wide-ranging and in-depth exchanges with the Chinese side during the visit and this visit would further bilateral judicial exchanges and cooperation, thus contributing more to the growth of bilateral friendship.

Luo also briefed the visitors on China's economic and social development and the building of its democratic, legal system.

Serra, who is here as guest of China's Supreme People's Court, spoke highly of China's achievements in economic and social development and cultural protection.

Although Portugal and China differ in their national conditions, Serra said, the judicial departments of the two countries face the common task of safeguarding national and social stability and economic growth, and it is necessary for both sides to have in-depth exchanges.

He said he hopes that the two sides will further increase judicial exchanges and cooperation on the basis of mutual respect.
