Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing on Monday met with his counterparts from Bhutan, Denmark, Chile, Cambodia, Turkey and Tunisia on the sidelines of the 59th UN General Assembly and exchanged views with them on wide-ranging issues of mutual concern.
Their talks covered bilateral ties, the reform of the United Nations and the international financial system, regional cooperation in Asia and the fight against poverty and terrorism, said sources close to the talks.
During his talks with Bhutanese Foreign Minister Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk, Li reiterated China's policy of good neighborliness with countries which share borders with China and expressed China's readiness to develop good relations of cooperation with these countries and boost regional cooperation.
While meeting his Chilean counterpart, Maria Soledad Alvear Valenzuela, the Chinese minister said the two countries, with political mutual trust and economies that are complementary to each other, have broad prospects for further cooperation.
On her part, Alvear said Chile highly values its relations with China and adheres to the one-China principle. She promised that her country will handle properly the issues concerning Taiwan during the coming Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) eeting to be held in Chile.
During their meeting, Li and Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller focused their discussion on enabling the United Nations to play a bigger role and pushing relations between China and the European Union to a new height.
The Chinese foreign minister also attended a political dialogue with foreign ministers of the Rio Group. He spoke highly of the fruitful cooperation between the two sides and said this may well serve as an example for South-South cooperation.
He expressed China's willingness to substantiate this bilateral cooperation on an equal footing and in a pragmatic manner.
He praised the positive role of the political dialogue mechanism between the two sides over the past 14 years in bettering mutual understanding and broadening political mutual trust.
Foreign ministers of the 19 Rio Group member countries, on their part, expressed their readiness to promote bilateral friendly ties, and contribute to South-South cooperation.
Foreign Minister Li arrived in New York on Sunday to address the general debate of the 59th UN General Assembly. He will leave New York on Thursday.
