Death toll in Haiti floods hits 1,650

The death toll caused by devastating floods in Haiti has climbed to over 1,600 people. Another 800 remain missing. Hurricane Jeanne is the latest tragedy to hit Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas.

On Sunday, waters and mud cascaded into the northern city of Gonaives and other parts of the north and northwest, leaving tens of thousands of people with nothing.

UN peacekeepers are in the city to protect food distribution centers and to help with logistics.

A spokeswoman for the World Food Program said about 120 tons of food have been distributed in the last three days. That's enough supplies for 200,000 people each day.

Haiti is prone to deadly floods because 98 percent of its forests have been chopped down, mainly to make charcoal for cooking. In May, about 2,000 people died in flooding in the south of the country.
