Pyongyang has warned at the UN that the danger of war on the Korean Peninsula is "snowballing," accusing Washington of destroying the very basis for negotiations on the country's nuclear program.

The DPRK said it is holding out for the possibility that the stalled six-party talks could be resumed if conditions are met.

The head of the DPRK delegation to the UN General Assembly Choe Su-hon said the US has intensified threats to attack his country.

Choe Su-hon also said the US has destroyed the basis for negotiations to resolve the dispute over Pyongyang's nuclear program.

Choe Su-hon said: "On the Korean Peninsula, the national division forced by outside forces has been lasting for more than half a century and the danger of war is snowballing, owing to the extreme US moves to isolate and stifle the DPRK, and threats of pre-emptive strikes

Choe repeated Pyongyang's willingness to freeze its nuclear program, but said that was only possible if the US rewards the country.

He also made clear that if the six-party talks are to resume, the secret nuclear experiments in South Korea must be clarified.

At a press conference following the UN speech, Choe confirmed his country is capable of a ballistic missile test, but said allegations of a planned test are nothing but rumors.

Choe also said DPRK had already reprocessed and weaponized 8,000 spent fuel rods. Choe gave no details on the kind or number of weapons, but experts say this could boost Pyongyang's nuclear arms cache from one or two to eight.
