Poland president arrives in Moscow for working visit
font size

Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski has arrived in Moscow on Tuesday for a working visit at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

It will be the second meeting between the two heads of states in the current year. They had a one to one meeting in France in June at the celebrations on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of allies' landing in Normandy. During that meeting the Russian president invited his Polish counterpart to visit Moscow in September.

A dialogue between Moscow and Warsaw includes both political problems and issues of economic interaction. The trade turnover between Russia and Poland may exceed 7 billion dollars, Alexander Yakovenko, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman, said.

"Upon acceding to the European Union Poland remains Russia's major trade and economic partner in Central and East Europe", Yakovenko said. The sides discuss the possibility of concluding agreements on long-term purchases of Russian oil and its transit over Poland, operating at design capacity the first thread of Yamal-Western Europe gas pipeline and prospects for expanding the transit gas pipeline network toward Western Europe.

The development of bilateral military-technical cooperation remains an important theme of the Russo-Polish dialogue. It includes the implementation of projects to modernize Russian-made planes and helicopters used by the Polish Air Force, as well as armoured equipment. "The Russian side will raise the question about the need for an early settlement of license relations in the area of military-technical cooperation", Yakovenko said.
