Kenya looks forward to enhancing friendship, cooperation with China: VP

Kenyan Vice President Moody Awori said Wednesday in Nairobi that his country will continue to enhance the relations with China in the political, economic and social fields.

"Kenya attaches great importance to its relations (with China) and I look forward with great optimism to the continuation of strong bonds of friendship and cooperation that have existed between our two countries and peoples," Awori said while addressing a reception marking the 55th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China which falls on Oct. 1.

"A number of development projects stand out as pillars of our cooperation," said Awori, citing the Moi Referal Hospital in Eldoret (in western Kenya) and the Kasarani International Sports Center in Nairobi, both of which were built by China, and the scholarships granted to Kenyans studying in China.

"I am glad that within the framework of our cooperation, we have worked very closely in safeguarding our mutual interests and common objectives," he added.

Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Chongli also addressed the gathering, saying that "China and Kenya have long maintained cordial relationship, which dates back to as early as 600 years ago, when a Chinese navigator led his fleet to Kenya and reached the then Malindi Kingdom."

"Although geographically far apart, China and Kenya share similar historical experiences and are faced with the same task of development today," said Guo.

"China always treasures the bilateral relations with Kenya and is ready to make great efforts and continues to stride forward hand in hand with Kenya to bring our long-term, mutually beneficial and friendly relations and cooperation to a brighter future," added the Chinese ambassador.

Present at the gathering were some 300 guests, including Kenyan cabinet ministers Kiraitu Murungi, Najib Balala, Raila Odinga and Kenyan Deputy Speaker of National Assembly David Musila.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of China's National Day, Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki on Tuesday sent a congratulatory message to Hu Jintao, president of the People's Republic of China.
