Ugandan Prime Minister Apollo Nsibambi said here Thursday that "Uganda has consistently supported the principle of 'one China' policy and will continue to work for the reunification of Taiwan province with China."
Nsibambi made the remarks in his written speech read by Minister of Tourism, Trade and Industry Edward B. Rugumayo at a reception given by Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Li Qiangmin to mark the 55th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, which will fall on Oct. 1.
The Ugandan prime minister said that "we have no doubt that this will be attained peacefully."
Nsibambi pointed out that "at political level, Uganda and China share a common vision of national unity, economic development and social emancipation of their people."
He spoke highly of the bilateral relations between the two countries, saying that "this year marks the 42nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and Uganda. The political and economic relations between our two sister countries continue to grow from strength to strength."
"At international level, our two countries endeavor to seek common ground on issues of mutual interest and we in Uganda believe that issues of international nature or regional nature should be resolved peacefully through institutional mechanism set up like the United Nations, African Union and other institutions," the prime minister said.
He thanked the Chinese government for its numerous gestures of friendship and solidarity, adding that "we hope under the China-Africa Cooperation Forum, Uganda will benefit more under the programs of human resources development."
Chinese Ambassador Li Qiangmin said at the reception that China and Uganda "have established profound friendship in the long period of efforts striving for national dignity and economic development, adding that "over past years, the two countries have been supporting and helping each other in national construction and international affairs."
He thanked Uganda for it "firmly supports the 'one China' policy on the issue of Taiwan."
Ugandan Speaker Edward Ssekandi and more than 10 government ministers attended the reception.
