China has issued a traffic safety alert for the week-long National Day holidays, after at least 55 people died and 115 were reported missing in three major travel accidents in the past week.
The emergency order, posted on the website of the State Administration of Work Safety, urged greater transport safety during the coming holidays, when more than 100 million people are expected to travel.
China's roads are some of the most dangerous in the world.
Last year, 104,000 people died in traffic accidents, or 285 every day.
Meanwhile, according to the State Administration of Tourism, tickets for major air routes throughout the country were 90 per cent overbooked, while train tickets were also sold out on major inter-city travel for the next two days.
