Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai was elected president of the third Legislative Council (LegCo) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) at its first meeting Wednesday afternoon.
The 59-year-old Fan, who had been president of the previous twoLegCo, was elected as a member of the third LegCo through direct elections on Sept. 12.
Fan obtained the Bachelor of Science Degree from the Universityof Hong Kong in 1967, the diploma of administration from the university in 1971, and Master of Social Sciences in 1973.
Fan served as a member of the Preliminary Working Committee of the Preparatory Committee of the Hong Kong SAR from 1993 to 1995, and a member of the Preparatory Committee of the Hong Kong SpecialAdministrative Region from Dec. 1995 to Jul. 1997.
Fan was also elected member of the Selection Committee for the first Hong Kong SAR government in Nov. 1996.
Fan served as a member of the Hong Kong SAR Provisional Legislative Council in Dec. 1996 to April 1998, and its president from Jan. 1997 to April 1998. She was also member and president ofHong Kong SAR's first and second Legislative Council.
Fan was chosen deputy of the Hong Kong SAR to the 9th and 10th National People's Congress.
