China's non-governmental charity, China Charity Federation, announced on October 11 to elect "Charity Ambassadors" to mark its tenth anniversary.

President of China Charity Federation Fan Baojun said at a press conference that this is the first time the Chinese public will elect "ambassadors" to help promote the organization.

The public can vote for a total of 12 music, movie and sports stars via Internet or short message, said Fan. The elections will last more than three months until Jan. 20 next year.

The selected stars will participate in series of charity activities and raise money for handicapped or orphaned children next year, said Fan.

Established in 1994, the China Charity Federation has received a total of 5 billion yuan (602 million U.S. dollars) in donations through its national branches, Fan said.
