Super rice adds 6.5 billion kilograms in 7 years in China
font size

In 2004, super rice grew from another 48 million mu of land in China, 8 million more than that in 2003. The 112 million mu of super rice field in Yangtze River and northeast areas, with output per mu reaching 600 kilograms representing a growth of 55 to 60 kilograms, had yielded more rice by about 6.5 billion kilogram by the end of 2003 since 1998.

China's significant breakthroughs in super rice, attributable to efforts of main rice institutes in recent years, have made the country lead the world in this field.

So far 12 new varieties of super rice have been developed and proved their quality in provincial or national tests. These varieties grew more than 700 kilograms of rice per mu on average in a hundred mu of demonstration field and the highest output reached 800 kilograms a mu.
