The United States will discuss with its Group of Eight (G8) partners on how to make Iran comply with the requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Friday's meeting, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said on Wednesday.
"We are going to hear from the Europeans on the work they have been doing on how to get the Iranians to comply," Boucher said at a news briefing.
"And we are going to discuss with them further what to do in the Security Council if there's agreement in November to refer it there," Boucher said.
Boucher said both the United States and the Europeans have beenlooking for Iran to take action to meet its requirements before the November IAEA meeting.
"If that action does not take place, then it is likely that other countries will be more supportive of the US goal, which is to move this matter to the Security Council," Boucher said.
Boucher said "political directors and senior officials" from the G8, grouping the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada and Russia, will take part in Friday's meeting in Washington.
Under prodding from the United States, the IAEA has set late November as the deadline by which Iran must comply with demands that it do more to disclose its nuclear activities.
The United States has threatened to refer Iran's nuclear activities to the United Nations Security Council for discussions of sanctions.
Iran has insisted that its nuclear program is for civil purposes.
