China to build pollution free vegetable base for 2008 Olympic Games
font size

Beijing is planning to build a vegetable garden in three years in an effort to offer pollution-free vegetables for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The vegetable field, 4,000 hectares in area, is expected to grow more than 20 kinds of vegetables, from tomatoes to romaine lettuce to hyacinth bean. They will be offered exclusively to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, according to Thursday's the Beijing News.

Li Jinshan, director of the Beijing Municipal Agricultural Commission, said the city will also build up meat, milk, egg and fruit production bases in the coming three years, because the Olympic athletes and visitors will be a big market for Beijing-grown food.

He also promised that quality of the edible agricultural products planted in Beijing's outskirtan area all meet the country's food safety standard within the three years.
