Haitian Prime Minister Gerard Latortue has accused former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide of inciting violence back home country while living in exile in South Africa. On Sunday, after attending a ceremony at the monument of Haiti's founder, Jean Jacque Soleil, Latortue called on South African President Thabo Mbeki to stop protecting Aristide.
At least 55 people have been killed by gunfire in Haiti's capital- Port-au-Prince since September 30, when Aristide supporters took to the streets to demand his return from exile, reported CCTV.com Monday.
Calling for peace in Haiti, Prime Minister La Tortue asked South African President Thabo Mbeki to stop protecting Aristide. He indicated that Mbeki is taking a big risk by providing Aristide political exile, allowing him to organize violence from South Africa.
La Tortue also says his government is ready to establish a dialogue with the opposition forces led by Aristide to try to find a peaceful solution to the current crisis. Earlier, La Tortue invited Aristide supporters to participate in the country's future electoral process.
Haiti is currently being governed by interim President Boniface Alexander. The government says presidential elections will be held next year, but no date has been set yet.
